What Makes a Cottage Garden?

What makes a cottage garden? At Lana's The Little House, in Forestville, enjoy the charming and intimate garden designed and maintained in the cottage garden tradition, surrounding the region’s one-of-a-kind Cotswold cottage. Built in the 1980’s by a self-taught architect inspired by a childhood fantasy, the dwelling was handmade from materials found in the surrounding woodland and countryside. The garden he designed and built to surround The Little House cottage hosts a kaleidoscope of showy flowers and plants.

We’ll tour the garden and talk about the basics of cottage gardening, observing the principles in action. Come hear about plants and design fundamentals most suitable for building and maintaining cottage gardens, with an emphasis on part-shade to shady conditions and flora native to the Northeast. The part shade - shady setting of The Little House and cottage garden makes Lana’s The Little House of special interest to Chautauquans.
